Comment 4 on Ashley Farrish's Being Bad blog - Patriotism

Patriotism - or the lack of

I think a discussion on patriotism as suggested by Ashley in his Being Bad blog would be a good idea for week 12. I believe that Brits are way less patriotic than years ago, and i think that is definitely bad. Perhaps the lack of it reflects in the attitude of the ASBO culture that exists on some estates and among some cultures in the UK. The rise of ASBO's and the decrease of patriotism could be linked, after all, if you are proud to be part of something and are loyal to your homeland, you wouldn't wreck and ruin it or milk it dry dry for benefits as some people do in our country. I mean, who actually celebrates St Georges Day in the UK? Apparently the number of ASBO's issued last year decreased by 34% compared to previous years but I'm sure its pretty easy to fiddle the figures. Have a look at the ASBO history timeline.

I once worked a delivery driver using my own vehicle. Being proud to be British i put the St Georges Cross on the back of my car as i do with all my cars. Unfortunately my boss who was not British said that the sticker had to be removed as it was upsetting workers of other nationalities. What a load of crap. Maybe the lack of patriotism is linked to the increase in our PC culture, because no matter what anyone does these day there always seems to be something wrong with it, like its upsetting certain religions or races. I think these days people have forgotten the sacrifices that were made for Britain to be free during the World Wars and this is also reflected in what is taught in schools these days. I think that's enough of that or people will be slating me no doubt.

Social class and bad behaviour
After discussing the notion of being bad with my family and friends, it was easy to see the differences in opinions about certain things. When i asked my pals how bad they thought certain thing were, like adultery, it was obvious that the older generation believed things like this were a lot worse than people in my age group. However, i noted it was also social class that affected the answers. My friend who i would say is working class and lives on a council estate said having an affair and cheating on your partner wasn't actually that bad and was just a part of life that happens to everyone at sometime. However my mom said it is really bad and should be punishable Bobbitt style (the guy who got his bits chopped off) for men. People i know who were brought up a lot more shall we say 'loosely' than i was believe that things classed as evil by my parents are not really that bad. Maybe its this change in attitudes that has seen affairs and adultery increase over the years.

Cashing in on bad behaviour
Something i was thinking about today was should people who are bad be allowed to cash in on their behaviour and make money from it? There are endless examples, the Kray Twins, who sold millions of books and had a film about them made, Nick Leeson, who they made a film about after his illegal gambling with other peoples money whilst he worked at a bank nearly crashed the words finances, the list is endless. Its mental there seem to be no laws that prevent bad people from cashing in on their behaviour. Its even worse when there are victims left behind picking up the pieces while the person who ruined it for them is making a killing. Another one that springs to mind is octuplets mother Mandy Allwood who lost all of her eight babies yet continues to cash in on her losses. The question is does she have a right to do this? It makes me wonder if she should be considered responsible for the deaths after taking fertility drugs without her doctor knowing, then continuing the pregnancy to the end despite pleas from doctors to terminate some of the foetuses to give the others a chance. Either way, she supposedly got a million pounds for her story and is now making more with the furor over the recent octuplets. If there was no money to be made from her pregnancy, would she have still continued with all 8 of the babies to the end? or did she realise aborting some of them makes her story less spectacular and therefore worth less money? I understand that fertility drugs are worth their weight in gold to childless couples, but who needs and can justify wanting eight? I think she can be classed as bad for continuing with all of them even though she knew the chance of all of them surviving was very slim. Of course that's just my opinion, but she already had 3 kids so she can't be classified as desperate and childless.

Comment 3 (Mathew J Davis' Being Bad Blog) & I forgot week 12 !!

After reading most of the other Being Bad blogs, it seems i have forgotten to suggest something to do in week 12. I'm afraid i'm not a drinker, so i wouldn't be up for visiting the pub and getting sozzled like most of the other bloggers think would be a good thing to do. In response to Mathew Davis' blog with the suggestion of visiting Joseph Fritzl's house, this guy was way past just being bad. He was a paedophile, rapist and kidnapper, besides other things, so i'd say he comes under the category of evil. I have a friend who visited Fred West's house in Gloucester before they demolished it, which i thought was morbid.
Some people have suggested a police station, prison or law courts, which would all be good and interesting. For those people interested in art we could visit The Museum of Bad Art ,- "The Museum Of Bad Art (MOBA) is the world's only museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition and celebration of bad art in all its forms." Although this would not personally appeal to me.
Maybe we could have a lecture about the psychology of bad behaviour, or a lecture about the so-called bad gene that is supposed to contribute the questionable behaviour of some people.

The end of the world? Robots and cloning
A recent article about scientists who are working with a robot and hoping to learn it to talk made me think about the Terminator film. If robots are eventually able to think and learn for themselves, could we one day end up with the war like the one in the Arnie film where robots are battling humans for control of the earth? I feel this could one day actually happen, i know it sounds stupid now but if these super robots become more human like, surely they will have individual personalities. So we could end up with one like Hitler who wants to over take the world, which sounds silly, but it could actually happen if they become that advanced. If they learn to repair, modify and advance their own technology on their own, its obvious this could become a reality.
Whilst on the subject of robots and what i think are bad things that scientists do, what does everybody think of cloning? Personally, i feel its not for humans to interfere with 'gods' design, which is what cloning does. Whilst in some countries it is illegal to undertake research of this kind, there are countries that are not in the EU and who open their arms to any mad scientist and allow them to do whatever research they like in return for a nuclear bomb. I feel any kind of genetic engineering, such as that of GM foods, is wrong but i know its only a matter of time before some one clones a human. There is an interesting website that contains endless pages on cloning with both for and against arguments, and even though i'm not religious i agree with Pope Benedict XVI who stated "Human cloning is more dangerous than weapons of mass destruction". But isn't this guy from the same clan who told people in Africa not to use condoms during the Aids epidemic? or am i wrong? I remember the world wide frenzy when the Raelian sect declared they had cloned a child which had been born from an egg that was fertilised using a skin cell from the mother. The Raelian sect was established by an ex journalist on the belief that humans were first cloned 25,000 years ago by aliens, although i've yet to find any evidence that backs up their claims. Its strange to see that the Raelian logo (on the left) actually incorporates a Nazi swastika in the middle.
Most religions have stated cloning is immoral and should not be used for any purposes. But what about the parents who have already had one disabled child so are having the egg genetically modified to ensure their next child does not suffer from the same problems, does this make them bad people? I can understand why they do it but its difficult to say if its bad and whether they should be allowed to do it or not. Genetic engineering is a new science and who's to know what problems doing that kind of thing could cause in the future.

Smoking
On the subject of smoking which has produced a lot of discussion on the classes blogs, has anyone had a read of 'Smoke gets in your eyes' by Michael Thibodeau and Jana Martin? [Link to Publishers Comments page]. Its an interesting book if your into the history of smoking and cigarette design and packaging over the last century. Its obvious the number of smokers has declined rapidly over recent years compared to the 1940' and 1950's, but after reading this book its easy to see why smoking was seen to be so attractive back then. Cigarette packet designs evolved with the times and reflected what was happening in peoples lives. Different designs were created to attract certain types of people, and its funny to see the different types of designs that were aimed at different social classes. Cigarettes aimed at the upper classes were covered with royal crests and things like that (even fake wood) and came with names like Tophat, Cartier, Lyrics, Pearls and Old Golds, even Marlboro were aimed at these type of people, where as designs for the lower classes were adorned with mainly pictures for the illiterate which reflected whatever was the fad at the time. Designs contained pyramids, Chinese symbols and stuff like that, and came with names like Death, Black Cat, Spud and Hope. There are fag boxes designed especially to attract the ladies with names like Syrena which had a mermaid on the box, Fems, and Belinda's super king menthol's.
Cigarette designs were influenced by everything. Politics and propaganda designs were popular during both World Wars, with designs covered in B5 bombers for the Americans and the red rising sun logo for the Japanese. Presidents in the USA always advertised on fag boxes, and would usually contain a collectible gimmick to encourage sales. Animals were also popular as were scenes of trees and plants. There were Bonny fags with an Alsatian on, Black Cat and Tigers all covered in the relevant animals. Other favourites were cars, horses, Chinese and Indian designs, pictures of the sea and boats, and even a box called Star which were covered in graffiti and were aimed (although very covertly) at the youth market until the government stepped in. All these designs show just how much what was on the cover of the box influenced who would buy them. Its also interesting to see how the designs changed after the advertising ban and warning labels were introduced. They also show just how much smoking was a popular past time.

"Schoolgirl gives birth to two twins" - how does this reflect on our society and does our welfare system contribute to the problem?

http://news.aol.co.uk/schoolgirl-gives-birth-to-twins/article/20090220151949610009211

Another story of irresponsible teenagers appeared on the net today when a 15 year old schoolgirl became pregnant at aged 14 by her 15 year old boyfriend class mate. The obvious bad points regarding this are clear for all to see. However, what surprised me was the quote by the mother -
Samantha's mother Janet Gilbert added: "Daniel (the father) stayed here at our house with Sammii the odd night and, of course, it happened. You can't stop young couples when they're courting - if they weren't here they would just go somewhere else."
How bad is that? How many of you would let your 14 year old daughter have her boyfriend round to stay the night and leave them to it? I feel this is basically giving the child the all clear to do what she wants. If the parents had perhaps instilled better morals in their daughter maybe she wouldn't have gotten into this mess in the first place. I think the parents are the key people to blame in all of this, i know they can't watch their kids 24 hours a day but if you instill the right ideas in their heads and talk beforehand about these matters, i'm sure the teenage pregnancy rate (which is one of the highest in Europe) which be a lot lower. Its obvious people won't agree with me on this, but if i was a teenage schoolgirl and i knew my mother would absolutely kill me if i went home pregnant at that age, i'd think twice about hopping into bed with my boyfriend. If i was desperate, i'd ensure some form of contraception was used. I have no sympathy for these people.
Its easy to work out that teenaage parents are not thought of very highly in the media or by the general public. I think the reason for them being seen as so bad is due to their age and inexperience and the general link between them and the benefits and dependency culture that exists in the UK. There have been plenty of stories in the media (not just the Sun newspaper) about young schoolgirls becoming pregnant for the benefits or a flat, which is for obvious reasons extremely annoying for the average tax payer. I think the high number of teen pregnancies reflects a change in our society, and goes beyond the point of it just being free will and choice. If there was no help, no benefits or places to live for these people and the law was different, i'm sure the amount of teenagers becoming pregnant would be a lot lower. I'm sure that knowing our wonderful system of welfare support will provide for them makes getting pregnant at such a young age all that more enticing. If 15 year old Samantha knew there would be no help for her or her twins and that she would have to find employment and work long hours just to pay for them would she have reconsidered continuing with the pregnancy? 50 or 60 years ago these girls were treated extremely differently, which i'm not saying was right, but it was a reflection of the times, just as the current teen pregnany rate is a reflection of the way our society is heading. With the millions of tax payers pounds that have been plowed into sex education, you'd think that teen girls would realise there is a much more fulfilling life ahead by continuing education, getting a good job and meeting a partner, then considering kids later on in life. Well thats what i'd think anyway.

I wonder what sort of impact having extremely young parents has on a child. Can an immature 15 year old really teach another child how to become a worthwhile and fruitfull member of society, or are they just adding to the next generation of ASBO kids? I'm sure time will tell. Theres also the impact that having kids young has on the parents. What percentage of teen parents actually continue their education and get a good job? How many teen parents if asked did they make the right choice and were completely honest with themselves would answer they would have been better off waiting till later on in life to have kids? Finally, does our universal welfare system add to the problem, and is this why our teen pregnancy rate is higher than other countries who do not have a welfare system like ours?

I'm entitled to my opinion, as is everybody, but i think all of the above mentioned questions are worth asking. Being a man i'm sure there are a lot of experiences teen mothers go through that i can't relate to, but as i've worked all of my life, and payed a lot of tax that funds these kind of things, it definitely gives me the right to have my say on these matters.

Infidelity - both sexes are just as bad

According to research carried out in the USA by the University of Washington "the number of young women who report engaging in extramarital sex is not much lower than that of men" . I disagree with people who say men are more likely to cheat on their partner than women. I think this may have been the case years ago, but not more recently. I've asked my friends and the number of women who said they would cheat is the same as the number of men. According to another study, high hormone levels in women makes them more inclined to infidelity, so i wonder if this is the same for men? <Are more women committing infidelity article>
All the people i know who have ever cheated on their partner did it for the thrill, and one 40 year old guy who i know cheated on his wife of 12 years (they have three kids) with a 16 year old girl. Hes now divorced and lives with the 16 year old, and says he has no regrets which i find hard to believe.
So why is it so bad? I think its because a persons body is so private and intimate, and should only therefore be shared with their partner. I find it strange that the number of open relationships is growing, can these really be called relationships?
Infidelity is also extremely common in the media and there are a lot of role models who have had affairs that kids look up to. If a kids dad leaves the family home to shack up with his secretary, would this make the kid more likely to do the same thing when hes older?
Maybe its also something to do with respect. If you have a lot of respect for yourself surely you are far less likely to have a one night stand with someone you have never met before from down the pub.
Say your married and your partner ends up with a disease that takes their mind away, but you find someone else and start a relationship, is that infidelity? After all marriage vows are for better or for worse.
I'd say the most common reason for infidelity has to be the thrill, with the sneaking around and the lying all adding to the buzz. A lot of people just get bored of their relationships and just stay together for the kids, I'm sure that will make someone more likely to cheat. And then there's sex, which has got to be a number one reason as well. Men who cheat usually do it with a women who has got something that their wife hasn't, like the lovely body that the wife lost after having kids, or they might just be a lot younger which I'm sure would appeal to most middle aged married men.
President Clinton had an affair with Monika Lewinsky I'd say for the sex. There's no way the first lady would let old Bill anywhere near her with a cigar. Is it true he did the dirty deed then smoked it? Clinton had everything in life, so i wonder what he saw in Lewinsky, perhaps it was just because she was just a lot dirtier in bed that his wife. Either way, when the President of the USA engages in behaviour of that kind its hardly an example to all the younger kids who look up to him. It still amazes me to this day that Clinton was dumb enough to 'dirty her dress' and allow her to keep it. He signed his own execution warrant.
I think all people who cheat are selfish, and only consider their own needs. Its also worse when families are broken up by infidelity and there are children involved. I also find it surprising that some women know that their husbands are having an affair but for fear of losing him allow it to continue.
Why is it that a lot of girls who cheat do it with their boyfriends best mate? Is it because that person is just around at the right time, or because the thrill of getting caught, especially with the best mate who is obviously close to the BF, makes it a lot more of a turn on?
I can understand that some people get married, feel at that time its the right thing to do, but then meet the person of their dreams. But surely its better to end the marriage and start a proper relationship than sneak around hoping not to get caught.
I'm sure that if i was cheating on my girlfriend the guilt would eat away at me, and then eventually she would notice something was wrong. Maybe i just haven't got that sneakiness in me that is required to keep a long term affair going. And I'm sure if my girlfriend was at it i would be able to pick up some sort of sign that everything was not all OK. I'd rather be told straight to my face than find out accidentally that shes been screwing my best mate for the last 2 years.
I read a lot of true crime books and where a person is murdered by a loved one, its usually some sort of infidelity that's involved. It just shows how a simple fling can turn into something a lot more serious. But as with being a cheat, i think murderers have something in them that the average person just simply doesn't have.
That's enough for today, all this thought of cheating has got me thinking.

Comment 2 - on Sharon Meeley's blog about Alfie Patten and dog shit and rants about other just as bad stuff

http://beinggood-selhurst62.blogspot.com/
I totally agree with Sharon Meeley when she says that 'kids' like Alfie Patten are responsible for their own actions . When i was in high school we started sex education in our first year so age is no excuse. Alfie's girlfriend is older than him so should have known better. I disagree with Sharon that the parents aren't to blame, i feel they are just as much to blame as the 4 foot Romeo himself. Its a well documented fact that the children of teenage mums have kids just as young when they grow up. It runs in the families. Maggie Thatcher was right to go on about dependency culture, its obviously us, the tax payer, who is going to pay for Pattens baby. They feel its a right to be provided with some where to live and benefits. It makes me really angry when scutters like him are knocking out kids at that age and our pensioners who fought for our freedom during the war are suffering in poverty. When i was 13 i knew the difference between right and wrong, i knew about the birds and the beasts, and i knew i was responsible for my own actions. It takes two to tango, and i know for a fact if i had done what Alfie has i would have got a right kicking off my parents for showing the family up and bringing disrespect on my home. There is absolutely nothing that can justify having a child at his age. My best mate reckons the kid can't be Alfie's cause he don't look like his balls have dropped, let alone need a shave. There is no way at their age they can legally earn the money to provide for a child so why on earth does the government allow it to go on. The Telegraph says government studies show the number of teen pregnancies are increasing, so the problem is getting worse. I'm all for peoples rights and having choice, but people like that just take the piss. Change the subject, bloods starting to boil. And yes, they are all bad, equally.

Anyway, on to more bad blood boiling stuff. My house is only around a ten minute walk from the train station, which i catch to get to uni. So on Tuesday morning i set off to get the train as usual, and i was absolutely astounded at the amount of dog crap that was everywhere. I feel sorry for the people who live on corners around here because it seems they have signs outside their homes which are invisible to normal folk that says, "dogs come shit here - the larger the dog the better". There was one area, about thirty feet of average sized pavement, and on it there were about seven or eight massive mounds, i presume from an Alsatian or Doberman, of shit, and some poor bugger had trod in the one and left footprints. How disgusting is that?

Dog owners who allow their pets to do this are both bad, and very irresponsible. That shite spreads germs into homes and carpets off shoes and trainers. My nan was saying the other day that when she was young people used to scrub their door step till it shone, and everyone would sweep the piece of pavement outside of their homes to keep the street clean. Whatever happened to that pride people used to have in their area? Dog owners who don't clean up after their pets are most definitely bad, and bastards at that. So the question is why do they do it? Is it a sense of not being bothered about where they live, a lack of pride in their street? I'd say this plays a part, but i guarantee the kind of person who lets their dog go to the toilet outside some poor buggers home will definitely be a scutter in other ways, like spitting everywhere, not cleaning up their rubbish, chucking fag butts everywhere and failing to do other good citizenly things like that. I think the fines should be harsher, and more of those sly little cameras' the police have started attaching to lamp posts should be used. Or make the bastards eat it when they get caught.

Time to go, I'm beginning to think i must be a sad moaning bugger typing a blog this long, but at least I'll get an A. Its 11.30 pm so i have to publish this so i can come back and moan some more tomorrow. Good night all.

Comment 1 - on 'It's the thought that counts' blog by Samantha Handley

http://itsthethoughtthatcounts-samyh.blogspot.com/2009/02/why-does-being-bad-feel-so-good.html#comments At last, a fellow smoker. Unfortunately we are a minority, and persecuted at that. There are very few being bad blogs that agree smoking is great. Britain is so politically correct these days, just because we smoke we are labelled as bad. But what gives anyone the right to comment on what we do? I DO NOT feel guilty, why should i, if you don't like it don't come near me. Simple as that, really.

Its amazing how the view of smoking, and smokers, has changed over time. Years ago we were the majority, everyone smoked, and no one cared. But thats all changed, and i'm sure before we die tobacco will be banned altogether in Britain.

Have a read of this blog. http://lovelyessence.livejournal.com/ The person says her hair smells from passive smoking, but surely she must tree hug smokers all day for that to happen? I admit my clothes smell, when i smoke too much, but not my hair, and it doesn't go dry and brittle. I'm sure this person is just winging for the sake of it, and smokers are an easy target.

Heroin addiction

Did everyone notice how judgemental people were in the first session? Well, i was thinking, and it struck me that someone admitted to being a heroin addict. But what was said about this in lecture? Absolutely nothing. I would have thought that Mark would have at least offered some help in private or something like that, but he didn't. That just shows how bad heroin addiction is perceived to be by both our CLASS and LECTURERS. It has not been mentioned once on a blog. Mark, by the looks of it, accidentally forgot to add it to the list of confessions on Wolf, no where does it say one of you confessed to being a heroin addict. https://wolf.wlv.ac.uk/hlss/40028/bad%20things%202008-09.htm?menu=152331

I think the above was an important point to make. Not offering help and denying it all shows how bad people feel it is, and that makes heroin addicts bad people.

Why am i going on about this? Because i battled heroin addiction for nearly ten years, and it ruined my life. Its exactly these attitudes that stop addicts getting the help they need. I got help, went to college, and am now at uni. So, which ever one of you is hooked on booting or shooting, it only gets worse, believe me, so get some help. Just make sure it ain't from the uni, or you will probably loose your degree. Enough moaning.
